Grab a SLICE of the New Film from Austin Vesely and Chance the Rapper

Well THIS is unexpected and exciting!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 2 years, chances are you’ve heard of the enigmatic Chance The Rapper, the 24-year-old budding music icon who has lit the music world ablaze with his jazz-infused uplifting rap songs about life in Chicago, his birthplace. Right alongside his meteoric rise is Austin Vesely, close friend and the director of many of Chance’s most recognizable videos, specifically the ingenious (and infectiously catchy) “Sunday Candy” from his Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment project.

Awesome, right? Now imagine the visionary eye behind that video making a crime film that features a Chinese food delivery driver werewolf—that takes inspiration from Harry Lime of The Third Man—who is wrongfully accused of causing the death of a pizza delivery driver in a world where ghosts and goblins are merely your next door neighbors! Well that is apparently what Austin Vesely’s debut feature, Slice, is. And we here at Ghastly Grinning could NOT be more pumped.

In an interview with the entertainment website Pigeons and Planes, Vesely said: “People ask me often if the film is really scary. I hope it has its moments but it's more of a comedy for me. Tonally, I was really inspired by Twin Peaks, if that says anything,” Vesely says. “I studied Paul Thomas Anderson's movies to figure out how to balance multiple narratives. TV shows as well, like Twin Peaks, to discover how to establish a sense of place. I guess this movie is like Magnolia with ghosts. Just kidding. Kind of.”

With a cast that also features Paul Scheer (The League), Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), and Joe Keery (Stranger Things) this project is set to be one to watch, and more than likely sooner than later! According to Vesely’s Instagram, on October 15th, he had already completed the first cut! So keep your peepers here for all upcoming Slice goodies as they come our way! Until then, catch the inventive first teaser trailer (that owes a heavy debt to the original Doodle Chaos: Line Rider - Mountain King viral video!) and check out some more character artwork from Vesely’s Instagram below!
