Soderbergh's UNSANE is insanely Shot On An iPhone
Steven Soderbergh dives into the horror genre with his upcoming film Unsane, which was shot in secret last year on an iPhone. And before you write that off, have a look at Sean Baker´s beautiful Tangerine -- which also was shot on an iPhone -- and you might change your mind. Unsane stars Claire Foy (The Crown) as a young woman involuntarily committed to a mental institution where she is confronted by her greatest fear — but is it real or is it a product of her delusion? The film co-stars Juno Temple (Horns, Killer Joe), Joshua Leonard (The Blair Witch Project), Aimee Mullins (Stranger Things) and is having its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February.
When being interviewed in Sundance, Soderbergh talked positively about shooting the film on the Apple smartphone.
“I think this is the future. Anybody going to see this movie who has no idea of the backstory to the production will have no idea this was shot on the phone. That’s not part of the conceit.”
“People forget, this is a 4k capture,” said Soderbergh, who was very impressed with quality of the iPhone cinematography. “I’ve seen it 40 feet tall. It looks like velvet. This is a game changer to me.”, he continued.
And when asked if he would continue to shoot exclusively on iPhones in the future, he replied:
“I’d have to have a pretty good reason not to be thinking about that first… There’s a philosophical obstacle a lot of people have about the size of the capture device. I don’t have that problem. I look at this as potentially one of the most liberating experiences that I’ve ever had as a filmmaker, and that I continue having. The gets that I felt moment to moment were so significant that this is, to me, a new chapter.”
Soderbergh is an interesting filmmaker and I´m super excited to see Unsane -- which hits theaters March 23. And if you´re curious to see how a feature film shot on a smartphone can look, check out the trailer above!
