SABRINA Cast As Horror Alum Joins The RIVERDALE Spin Off

To say that I'm a fan of Riverdale, the teen melodrama with a Twin Peak gloss and The OC's heart, is an understatement. I'm throughly absorbed in all of the Afterlife with Archie comic series (guys, Jughead is a werewolf), as well as the current Archie reboot in the same funny book form, and I'm on my third rewatch of the series. It's obsession-lite.

When Netflix announced that they were launching the new Sabrina series, based more on the The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina line and not the campy late nineties TGIF staple, I was insanely excited. Creators and show runners have stated that the show will tonally line up with seminal horror classics such as The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby, diving into the weird and occult while also exploring Sabrina Spellman coming to terms with the fact that she's half-witch, half-mortal. Kicking off her sophomore year at Baxter High, Sabrina is all that stands between the forces of darkness and light. Now we know our teenage witch will be portrayed by Kiernan Shipka.

Executive producer and creator of the Afterlife with Archie comic series, as well as current Archie Comics EIC, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa had the following to say about the casting Shipka: "We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list...This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”

While Kiernan has co-starred on prestige television such as Mad Men and The Feud, genre fans will recognize her from her starring role in the dread inducing Blackcoat's Daughter aka February. (Surprise, we're HUGE fans of it here at Ghastly Grinning.) So now that excitement from the very news of the show is amped up to eleven. Kiernan Shipka has definitely already showcased how to deal with some otherworldly evil and we're elated to see how she is staring it down with some incantations up her sleeve.

We'll keep you updated on any Sabrina news, until then, go catch up on Riverdale, season one is streaming on Netflix.
