NIGHTFLYERS Could Be The Next Great Horror Series
We’ve told you before about Nightflyers, the SyFy channel produced television series written by Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train, the upcoming remakes of Pet Sematary and The Grudge) based on George R. R. Martin’s novel of the same name which was previously adapted into a feature film in 1987 by Robert Jaffe (Motel Hell, Demon Seed) and Robert Collector (Red Heat, Memoirs of an Invisible Man). And we now have the first footage:
Clearly not the trailer we were all expecting, more a minute-long EPK to get our mouths watering for this epic sci-fi horror story, but what a first look! Seriously: how can our collective horror nerd hearts not flutter alive when we hear Martin say things like, “[It’s] a haunted-house story on a starship. It’s Psycho in space.” Psycho is one of the few franchises which sadly never went to space, so why the hell not! I think we'd all prefer "Norman Bates in Space" over GSV’s remake, wouldn’t you? And sure haunted house stories have nothing to do with the abject psychological horror of Psycho, but if Martin is clearly just relaying his tonal inspirations...then sign me the hell up!
More so fan culture is still riding a wave of science fiction horror excitement from The Cloverfield Paradox and Annihilation, to Black Mirror and the returning Westworld, it appears that Nightflyers will continue that trend, offering us the Event Horizon TV show of our dreams! And while I think George R. R. Martin may be letting hyperbole get the best of him (Martin’s novella shows no such similarities to Bloch’s, nor is Psycho a haunted house story), the mere idea of a haunted house in space is something I’ve loved since I was a kid getting into horror. Is it something that is easy to do? No, because it’s rarely ever done expertly well. But when it is, and Nightflyers is shaping up to be, there is nothing scarier.
Nightflyers has no release date yet, but SyFy has confirmed they are eyeing this coming Fall! Keep your dials tuned here for all the up to date news!
