Pairing: CLOVERFIELD (2008)

Hey, as long as we’re sitting down with some post-9/11 action, we might as well revisit one of the best. If you can stomach found footage horror without losing your lunch, Cloverfield is a terrifically tense on-the-ground look at a monster attack that has 9/11 imagery just ladled all the hell over it. This one is also fun, because pretty much every anonymous cast member’s star has risen since the movie came out, including T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley), Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex, Now You See Me), Ben Feldman (As Above So Below, Friday the 13th), and Jessica Lucas (Evil Dead, Pompeii).

Pairing: THE VAULT (2017)

Now is the time to reflect on the year that was and the films you missed, and you almost certainly missed The Vault, a heist-based horror film that slipped under the radar. From Dan Bush, one of the directors of The Signal, The Vault combines a bank robbery with supernatural horror, throwing two criminal sisters into a terror they could never have bargained for.

Pairing: HAPPY DEATH DAY (2017)

At first glance, you might not recognize any of the names of the people bringing Forever My Girl to the world, but look closer. Jessica Rothe is the star of last year’s excellent Groundhog Day/slasher film mashup Happy Death Day, a movie that is always worth watching or re-watching or re-re-watching. And conveniently, it just hit DVD and Blu-Ray this week…
