THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT Trailer is Gleefully Chilling

If you're like me, you've deeply mistaken Lars Von Trier's opulent serial killer film with Eli Roth's upcoming childrens horror film THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS. While the cross over appeal to an older audience is clear, you probably won't be wanting to take your tykes anywhere near Matt Dillon and his murder van dragging behind a bloody pulp of a corpse.

Did I mention though that I laughed out loud multiple times during this trailer?

While Cannes may be the stomping ground for some of the worlds toughest, and cynical, film critics my laugh isn't a sneer but rather a celebration in what appears to be the first Lars Von Trier film in decades that won't test my nerves in ways that I'm accustomed to in his oeuvre. I'll go as far to say that the trailer is absolutely exhilarating, showing Von Triers deft hand with balancing Comedy and Horror  that I dare say we haven't seen since Riget (The Kingdom). Von Trier is employing an almost childlike mania to his story of Jack (Matt Dillon), a serial killer who over the course of the film chronicles 12 years of his five most personally influential kills that developed him into the person we see before us.

Is it a little bit Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer with a dash of the humor of The Last Horror Movie and Man Bites Dog? Yes. And while I believe it will be the first Von Trier in years that won't emotionally devastate its audience, will our skin still crawl off of our bodies through blisteringly disgusting tension?

If a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound?
